Tiger Woods, the biggest star in golf, has recently been sidelined for the rest of the golf season due to a knee problem that he's getting surgery for. This has negative consequences for the sport of golf, as many people only really pay attention to it to check up on how their man Tiger is doing. His left knee requires reconstructive surgery, and it was planned for months in advance. You couldn't accuse Tiger of wimping out - he played his last tournament with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a double stress fracture of the left tibia - two injuries that would have sidelined most other professional athletes.
It had been thought that it was only a minor operation to take care of a cartilage issue, but it turned out to be much more serious. Luckily, he is projected to make a full recovery. Even Tiger isn't immune to the effects of age. His victory at the US Open seems even more impressive now that the news has come out that he was so severely injured during the game.
It's a tough choice for Tiger, but one that really had to be made in order to make sure that he could rehabilitate his knee properly. He still has years left in his career if he remains healthy, and it would be irresponsible to himself and all the people that rely upon him to overextend himself on the field. He should be back by the beginning of next season if all goes well.
