One of the biggest stories in golf in 2008 is Tiger Woods and his knee surgery. Tiger had a decent season up to the Masters this year, where he obviously struggled, finishing second. It was later announced that he would go for his third surgery on his left knee; in 1994 he had a tumor removed, and in 2002 had another procedure done. This year's surgery put Tiger out of the tour for two months.
Tiger returned for the U.S. Open, and despite a few uneven rounds, made it into the final grouping for the tournament. But on June 15, he was noticeably favoring his leg, and he winced noticeably after many of his putts. Despite his obvious pain, he fought through to only one stroke behind at the final hole, and forced a playoff. Fighting through his injury, he once again forced a tie, and won the championship in sudden death. Other players were amazed, stating in effect that he'd beaten the field at the U.S. Open on one leg.
Two days after his victory, however, it was announced that Woods would require anterior cruciate ligament surgery, and had been playing for almost a year with the damaged ligament. The injury would take Woods out of professional play for the rest of the season, including the last two major championships. Woods and his fans hope for a strong return to the game in 2009, and hope that the young star won't have to show off his determination and grit in quite such a damaging way in future.
