With Tiger Woods on the shelf recovering from knee surgery, the PGA Tour is suddenly wide open, with every tournament up for grabs. The opportunity is there for someone to step up and seize the spotlight. And Kenny Perry wants to be that guy.
Perry has exploded on the scene in recent weeks, capturing PGA Tour victories at the Memorial Tournament, Buick Open, and the John Deere Classic. Perry, who turned pro back in 1982, had only nine career PGA wins before his recent string of good luck.
Perry, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound native of Kentucky, is best known for being the all-time leading PGA money winner amongst golfers without a Major victory to their credit. Maybe having Tiger out of the way will finally enable Perry to break through and claim his first Major. He certainly seems poised for something special. He ranks with the tour leaders in a number of different statistical categories. He's currently first in scoring average (69.41), second in birdie average (3.97 per round), eighth in greens in regulation (68.40 percent), and fourth in all-around ranking. Perry's three victories in 2008 are only one behind Woods for the top spot.
It truly has been a magical season for Perry. His excellent performance caught the eye of Paul Azinger, who named Perry to the U.S. Ryder Cup Team. It's certainly a deserving honor. At 48, Perry is playing the best golf of his career. And with Woods sidelined, Perry may finally be able to get a chance to shine among golf's elite.
