Over the years there have been a number of female golfers who have attempted to make the jump from the LPGA Tour to the PGA Tour. However, the success level of these golfers has fallen well short of a victory on the men's tour. So there may be some good reason for a few eyebrows to be raised over the decision of Michelle Wie to play in the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open this week. It's not just that Wie will once again be trying to pit her skills against the boys, it's that she is also giving up the chance to qualify for the Women's British Open, which would seem to be the much more prestigious tournament.
However, Wie isn't really concerned about what other people think she should be doing with her career. And that includes other members of the LPGA Tour, such as Annika Sorenstam, have to say about it. Sorenstam, who also has made the effort to jump to the PGA Tour failed to make the cut in her only attempt to cross-over, had some harsh words for Wie's decision. Sorenstam has indicted that Wie should focus on qualifying for a Women's Major rather than trying to play with the men.
While many remain critical of her decision to play, as this will be Wie's eighth attempt to qualify on the PGA Tour, Wie says that she is just looking to have a good time. She has said all along that she is only interested in improving her game and lowering her score. The rest will be out of her hands. And if Wie can finally make the cut, she may silence all the critics anyway. Of course, it won't hurt that the top 50 men will be playing at the World Golf Cup this week, either.
