What's Up With FedEx and Tiger Woods?

Having a major contender like Tiger always assured sponsors of a large spectator gallery, as well as millions of viewers.  Since Tiger decided to have knee surgery this summer, how is all of that going to play out in the eyes of the sponsors?

It seems there is a bit of controversy with the advertising agents of FedEx.  In 2007, FedEx sponsored a four day tournament event in which points for winning were determined somehow within the total scoring of the four days.  It seems that Tiger chose not to play the first day, but did in fact play the last three days, coming out the winner with millions of dollars.  FedEx was a bit upset that Tiger did not show up the first day, realizing how it may effect the viewing status.  However, once he did start playing, FedEx could not have asked for a better ending.

Now, for the same four day tournament in 2008, and no Tiger Woods in contention due to the knee surgery, everyone is wondering what FedEx will do.  Will they no longer spend the high stakes on sponsoring this event, or will they follow through and hope for the best, knowing that Tiger should be back in full operation for 2009?

It is true that sports figures definitely determine what is watched on the television, and how much viewing and money will be spent on any one event because of their popularity and appearance.  However, since golf is an individual sport rather than a team sport, is it fair for FedEx to even make an issue when there are so many other top professionals still playing on the course.  Truly, Tiger Woods is not the only golfer that people watch or root for.
