There is no way to win if you don’t play. Tiger Woods is skipping New York's Westchester Country Club, home of this week's Barclays. His FedEx Cup points are 17,745 and number one world ranking say a lot about why he is a favorite. He has five top ten finishes and earnings of $4,425,000. Numbers two, three, and four are Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink and Geoff Ogilvy. Each has earnings which average $21,908,826. Their FedEx Cup points average 9,579. The four have top ten finishes of three, four, five and six.
Tiger continues to out last top contenders with his talent and strategy. His adaptability and stamina were exhibited recently when he continued play even though he was injured. Clutch shots are second nature to Tiger Woods. His concentration and ability to analyze the fairway and greens keep him winning.
Mark O'Meara, Woods' regular buddy remarked, “no one is bigger than the game.” Since turning pro in 1996 Tiger has not missed playing a major tournament. But we all know that when Tiger doesn’t play the game, it is not as interesting. He is the number one player of all time.
Tiger Woods has had a profound impact on golf. Players recognize the importance he has brought to the game's purse and TV ratings. Players of all skill levels benefited as the purse grew by 300 percent to a projected $278 million this year. Without him TV ratings have fallen by 68 percent. The year he turned professional, nine players made their first million, and last year ninety-nine players did that. Woods was not the first to earn $10 million in a season. But at age 32 he soon will be the first billionaire athlete.
