Lorena Ochoa is the number one ranked female woman golfer in the world and the only Mexican golfer ever to be number one. Just a little over a year ago an article in the LPGA Tour News lamented the fact that Lorena had no endorsements and that few people in Mexico knew why they recognized her face. She does not have her ego invested in the game of golf. Golf is a way to get her known and make positive things happen in Mexico.
Ochoa lived next to the Guadalajara Country Club and took up golf at the age of five winning state events by the age of six. She won five years in a row the title of Junior World Golf Championship and in 2000 went to college on a golf scholarship to the University of Arizona. After winning many awards in golf she left the university her sophomore year and turned professional and by April of 2007 she beat out Annika Sorenstam to become the worlds number one ranked woman golfer.
Now in Mexico, Ochoa and her childhood friend Vaca have set up Golf Academies for public use. They are free to those who want to really work at getting good. Lorena is the primary reason that the LPGA has extended to Mexico. Since 2004 Ochoa has been working on an education foundation. This project has helped many educationally and economically challenged families in Mexico.
Since the LPGA Tour News article, Ochoa has endorsed Ping and is greeted like a rock star in Mexico. Lorena Ochoa is a woman who is making Mexico and the world proud.
