Kathy Witworth

Kathy Whitworth was born in Monahan, Texas in 1939, but grew up in Mexico. She began golfing at the age of 15. She attended college in Odessa, Texas. She joined the LPGA at the age of 19. After joining the LPGA it took her four years to get her first win. After that win her career exploded. Kathy’s career spanned over a thirty-two year period.

She was a LPGA player of the year seven times. She was also named athlete of the year twice by the associated press. She was awarded several awards. She is an eight-time money leader and served as LPGA president twice. Kathy has won three championships and the Western Open. During her career she won eight times in 1965, eight times in 1967, and ten times in 1968. She holds 88 titles within her career. She had one at least one tournament a year between 1962 and 1998. In 1981 she became the first women to have her career earning reach one million dollars.

Kathy decided to retire in 1990. Now that she has retired she goes to Forth Worth, Texas to attend the junior girls tournament or at nearby clubs teaching lessons. There is still that chance that you might see her at tournaments around the world. She continues to play the game and the only thing missing from her career was winning the Women’s Open. If you are ever at a LPGA tournament don’t be surprised to look over and see Kathy Whitworth standing right there beside you.
