Nancy Lopez is considered to be one of the greatest golfers in the history of women's golf, although she never won the US Women's Open.
Born January 1, 1957 in Torrance, California, Nancy Lopez was introduced to the game of golf by her father when she was eight years old. When she was 12, she won the New Mexico Women's Amateur. In 1972 and 1974, Lopez won the US Girls Junior Championship. She played in the US Women's Open as a 17 year old amateur in 1975 and finished tied for second place.
In 1976, she was named All American and Female Athlete of the Year while attending the University of Tulsa. Lopez was a member of the US Curtis Cup and World Amateur Teams. She won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women National Championship.
After leaving college in her Sophomore year, she turned pro in 1977. In 1978, which was her first full season on the LPGA Tour, she won nine titles. She was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, won the Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average, LPGA Rookie of the year, and Player of the Year. Lopez was named Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1978 and also in 1985.
From 1983 to 1991, she only played on a limited basis due to the birth of her three children.
Lopez was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987. She is the only woman to win the LPGA Rookie of the year, Player of the Year, and the Vare Trophy in the same season.
Her company, Nancy Lopez Golf, makes a full line of women's clubs and accessories. Her golfing career earnings were $5,320,877.
