Woods Says Goodbye for the Season

Tiger Woods has almost always seemed to be unbeatable. He injured his left knee while jogging near his home some ten months ago. In April, he was out of commission for two months after doctors cleaned out his left knee. He then suffered a double stress fracture in his left tibia two weeks before the U.S. Open. His doctors prescribed three weeks on crutches and three weeks of total rest. Woods would have nothing to do with a prescription that would keep him from the U.S. Open. He played, and walked (or limped) away with a trophy.

Woods has announced, however, that he will be following his doctors' orders. He will undergo surgery to repair the ligament in his left knee in the future. A date has not been set. He has canceled a clinic at Comerica Park in Detroit. The anticipated recovery time is six to eight months. This will close the season for Tiger. He missed the British Open and will miss the PGA Championship, even though he won nine of 12 tournaments (including two majors) and never finished lower than fifth this season. Tiger will also miss the Ryder Cup in September. By winning the U.S. Open, Tiger qualified for the team. The ninth-seeded player will take Tiger's spot.

Woods already has 65 victories, ranking him third all time in PGA Tour history, and 14 major victories, second only to the record of 18 won by Jack Nicklaus. Injury or not, this is the 500th week Tiger has been ranked No. 1 in the world.
