The world of women’s golf has always been populated with talented players, but it has never been has popular as it is today. Young players like Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Lorena Ochoa, and Morgan Pressel are playing in the field today. With Annika Sorenstam thinking of retirement, these are the new, exciting names in women’s golf.
Back in the 1970’s and 1980's, fans cheered for players like Nancy Lopez, Beth Daniel, Pat Bradley, and Betsy King. But these ladies of the links did not get as much attention as today’s players do. One of the reasons for that is that today’s players are coming to the LPGA faster, younger, and with more athleticism than in the past.
Some people are comparing Paula Creamer, the “Pink Panther,” to Arnold Palmer because she is bringing more viewers and attention to women’s golf. Paula Creamer is a 22 year old dynamo who is always smiling, and loves the color pink (thus the nickname). She is also respected by women and young girls and loved by the men-- just like Palmer had the respect of the men and the love of women. As of this writing, Paula Creamer has won seven LPGA Tour events and is going strong.
Like any other sport, sponsors are very important. Some of the female golfers who are being sponsor by big companies right now are Morgan Pressel (Calloway), Michelle Wie (Nike), Paula Creamer (TaylorMade/ Adidas Golf), and Annika Sorenstam (Calloway, since 1985). The world of women’s golf has certainly changed since the days of Nancy Lopez.
