The 2008 British Open

Golf fans everywhere will agree that the British Open is one of the most anticipated events of the golfing season. This year was no exception. With the absence of Tiger Woods, who would step into his shoes? No one expected it to be a quiet unassuming man from Ireland, but at the end of the day, there it was: Padraig Harrington managed to best some of the greatest players in the world, to become only the second man in the history of the tournament to win back to back trophies.

Harrington was not without competition at this year’s open either, despite Tiger’s absence due to his recent knee surgery. Who would have expected Greg Norman, “The Shark”, to give Harrington such a run for his money? In fact, Norman was two strokes ahead of Harrington going into the final day of play. Norman and Harrington battled back and forth over the front nine, and slowly lost their lead over the rest of the pack in doing so, leaving the door open for several players to possibly win the tournament.

Awful winds made the added an element to the tournament making every drive an adventure and every putt a nail biter, but Harrington managed to make a jaw dropping eagle on the seventeenth hole, effectively sealing his victory over the field. The 53 year old Norman had to settle for sharing third place with golfer Henrik Stenson.

Would this tournament have played out differently if Tiger had been healthy? We will never know, but at the end of the day, many fans will agree that the best man won.
