Women in Golf

In a male-dominated world, especially in the sports arena, female success and accomplishment can result in overshadowing by male presence or catapult female achievement to extreme notoriety. One of the sports that allows females to shine through is golf. There have been several accomplished female golfers who have achieved great success.

One of golf's current female professionals is Paula Creamer. Known as the "Pink Panther," for her frequent pink golf outfits, Paula was ranked among the top five in the Women's World Golf Rankings in July 2008. Being a mere 21 years old, Paula Creamer was bestowed the honor of Rookie of the Year in 2005 and since then has achieved seven wins on the LPGA Tour, including nine wins professionally. Touring with the LPGA after only four short seasons, Creamer has claimed the 25th spot on the Tour's all-time money list for her earnings of over five million dollars.

One of the most noted female golfers is famed Annika Sorenstam. Although her numbers compare to golf's greats of history, like Wright and Whitworth, Sorenstam's accomplishment has been recognized during an extremely competitive era in golf history. The Sweden-born native has achieved 72 tour victories, including a record title in 2001 for shooting the lowest round in the history of the LPGA Tour with a score of 59. Sorenstam also is the record holder for achieving the most Player of the Year Awards, with a total of eight.

Those who pioneered the way for women in golf include Dorothy Campbell, Joyce Wethered and Glenna Vollett Vare and founders of the LPGA Tour, Louise Suggs, Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Patty Berg.

These women have shot a hole-in-one for women in sports worldwide.
