The 2008 British Open was held at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club. The last time it was held there was in 1998, when Mark O’Meara surpassed American Brian Watts during playoffs for his second most important challenge of the year. This was the 137th Open Championship and the game was held on July 17th to July 20th, 2008.
With Tiger Woods out of contention, this allowed the players the greatest opportunity of selecting the stack in the season’s third major. Ten of the past 14 Open champions hailed from the United States, but with Tiger Woods not able to play in this year’s competition, America’s outlook didn’t look as secure as it did in the past.
Padraig Harrington effectively secured his Open Championship. Padraig Harrington’s win made him the first European competitor in more than a century to succeed in winning the British Open two times in a row.
Padraig attempted four below on the rear nine to get away from Ian Poulter and Greg Norman. He is a 36-year-old Irishman and hurt his right wrist eight days prior to the beginning of the golf tournament.
The best ten candidates at the 2008 British Open were Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Trevor Immelman, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Justin Leonard, Padraig Harrington, Adam Scott and Hunter Mahan.
Tiger Woods was unable to play in the British Open due to surgery. He is the most significant and famous golfer to be absent from the British Open. Tiger is recuperating from knee surgery to repair torn ligaments.
