Tiger Woods Is Recovering!

The very private Tiger Woods was forced to go public on June 16 after winning the US Open for the third time. His damaged ACL required repair and he will be off the circuit to recover. Later, he blogged that he knew his ACL was in bad shape; however, he hoped to make it through the rest of the season. He developed two stress fractures while recovering from surgery in April, which just accelerated the need for ACL reconstruction.

On June 24, Doctors Thomas D. Rosenberg and Vernon J. Cooley announced that they were pleased with the results of the reconstructive surgery. Just one week later (June 30), Woods held a press conference at the AT&T National in which he stated he had had “a little surgery.” Woods is keeping abreast of the game: He complimented Anthony Kim for an excellent game at the AT&T National. For the first time in his professional career, Woods is missing a scheduled tournament.

ACL, short for Anterior Cruciate Ligament, injuries are relatively common among athletes. This knee-supporting ligament tends to become damaged when it receives both vertical and rotary pressure at the same time. Surgical treatment has not changed significantly in the last 20 years. Contrary to common myth, many athletes come back stronger after rehab. Without treatment, ACL can lead to long-term problems like arthritis and knee replacement.

Recovery normally takes 6-8 months and rehabilitation therapy is essential. Long-term prognosis is good for those who follow their treatment plan. ACL Solutions has a four-phase program. As with any medical treatment, each person’s program is individualized.
