Lorena Ochoa was born on November, 15, 1981, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. She began golfing at the age of 5, won her first State event at 6, and first National at 7. She has captured 22 State events in Guadalajara and 44 national events in Mexico. In 2001 and 2002, she was awarded the NCAA Player of the Year Award.
In 2004, Lorena won her first two LPGA Tours Titles and became the first Mexican-born player to win on the LPGA Tour. She is tied for the record for the second lowest score by a golfer of either gender, in a major tournament. In April 2007, she became the number one ranked woman golfer in the world, and was the first woman to earn more than $4,000,000 in a single season. Lorena Ochoa was given Mexico’s National Sports Award by Mexican President Vicente Fox. She is the youngest person to receive the award, as well as the first golfer to receive it. It is said that she gets “amazing results with class and style.” Lorena is the best Mexican golfer of all time, and the first Mexican golfer of either gender to be ranked number one in the world.
Lorena is popular among the fans as well as the other competitors. She is the main reason the LPGA expanded into Mexico. The most momentous sporting event in the recent history of Mexico was her victory in Corona. In Guadalajara and Mexico City, Lorena started the Ochoa Golf Academy. She also does charity work in Mexico. Despite all her success and popularity, she is still very down to earth, and lives with her parents in Guadalajara.
