Betsy King: Sharing her Faith Through Golf

Betsy King, 48, a native of Reading, PA, is competing in her 27th season in the LPGA tour. A Hall of Famer, she has won 34 trophies, including six major championships. Although King was fiercely competitive for the first part of her career, now she is more concerned with sharing her wealth, than piling up more wins.

While she still thinks about winning and is competing on the highest level, King sets achievable goals and stresses less over perfection. She commented that she has her life and the successes she can achieve in better perspective now because of her positive attitude and Christian faith. Through her work with Habitat for Humanities, the Christian Children’s Fund and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where she served on the board of directors, King has given many hours and financially supported many projects. She has helped raise funds for a village in Tanzania, Africa and was instrumental in getting the LPGA to adopt the village as an official project, resulting in the LPGA raising $225,000.

King commented that she has been able to share her personal faith with fellow golfers and the public because golf gives her a platform from which to speak. She has helped with faith projects internationally in Japan, Korea and Romania.

King also hosts the Wachovia LPGA Classic which raises charitable funds for Brooks County, her home town. She is not thinking about retirement and plans to play as long as she enjoys the game and can remain competitive.

King will be the honorary chairman for the Gettysburg, PA Championship from Aug. 22 through 24. The Championship is partnered with The First Tee of the Susquehanna Valley, a charitable organization which teaches life skills to children through golf.
