At a mere 18 years of age, Michelle Wie is one of the most well known athletes of this century. In 2006, she was named by Time Magazine as one of 100 people to shape our world. Her playing and success began at a very early age. At age of 10, she became the youngest female ever to qualify for the Womens U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships.
She played as an amateur from 2002-2004. During this time period, she set many records by being the youngest female ever to participate in numerous events. She won the Hawaiian State Open Women's division, was the youngest player to qualify for an LPGA event, the youngest player to make the cut at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the youngest player, male or female to win a USGA adult event by winning the Women's Amateur Public Links, and was the youngest player and only the fourth female ever to play in a PGA event. Because she played all of these events as an amateur, she did not receive any of the $250,000 that she qualified for in the 2004 season.
Michelle made the decision to turn pro for the 2005 season. Since turning pro, the 2008 tour has been the most difficult. She has fallen short on several tournament cuts, not received exemptions she expected, and was disqualified for forgetting to sign her second round score card. As a result, Michelle has announced that she will withdraw from Stanford University to place her full focus on her golfing career.
