Although Cristie Kerr started golfing at age eight, her official golf career was launched by winning the 1994 Junior Orange Bowl. She was named Junior Player of the Year by the American Junior Golf Association in 1995 and was Low Amateur at the U.S. Women’s Open in 1996. Her first pro victory was the Ironwood Future Classics in 1996. Cristie turned pro right out of high school. She started on the slow side, but in 1999 made it to the top 50 on the money list. In 2004, she was the fifth top money winner and rose to third in 2005. Cristie is known for her putting, finishing top five on the LPGA Tour in putts/greens hit in 2005 and 2006. In addition, her peers also consider her to be among the longest hitters.
During those years, Christi Kerr had more on her mind than golf. In 2003, she founded the Birdies for Breast Cancer Foundation. She received the 2006 LPGA Komen Award for her dedication to find a cure for breast cancer. One such example was in 2005 when she raised 100 thousand dollars at the Reunion Resort and Club outside Orlando FL for the cause. The proceeds went to the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Cristie’s appearance in 2005 on the third season episode of her friend Donald Trump’s hit series The Apprentice shows that she doesn’t take herself too seriously. Listed as Cristie Kerr’s best quote in responding to the LPGA drug testing question was, “Well, as long as they don’t test for wine, I think I’m alright.” This talented young lady finished in the top ten in half the tournaments she entered and ranked 2nd in scoring average only behind Annika Sorenstam. Cristie Kerr has a big heart, a great golf game and a delightful sense of humor.
