Born in Vermont, but growing up in Nevada, Patty Sheehan became one of the greats on the LPGA Tour. Patty had a very successful amateur career and attended both the University of Nevada and San Jose State University.
Patty joined the LPGA Tour in 1980, and had her first professional victory the following season. This victory awarded her Rookie of The Year title in 1981. She continued to become strong on the Tour, winning the LPGA Championship in both 1983 and 1984. Her following years through the 1980’s kept her high in the rankings, as well as receiving the LPGA Tour Player of the Year in 1983.
As her drive for the game of golf increased, so did Patty’s overall game and career. She started the 1990 season off with a real bang, gaining 5 wins. In ’92 and ’94, she won the U.S. Women’s Open, and the LPGA Championship in ‘94. For 11 straight years, Patty remained in the Top 10 on the money list. After winning her 30th tournament, she was qualified for the LPGA Hall of Fame in 1993. Her final LPGA victory was in 1996 at the Nabisco Dinah Shore (which is now called the Kraft Nabisco Championship).
Even though Patty endured a traumatic year in 1989 when she lost everything in the San Francisco earthquake, her determination kept her above it all. Patty is well respected, and classified one of the best players in LPGA history. Others have said she is a “classy example of success and excellence in the world of golf”. Patty is one of the first LPGA golfers to announce that she was a lesbian. She and her partner have two adopted children.
