The 2008 British Open was the 137th open championship. It was held July 17th through July 20th. Practice days for the British Open were from July 13th through July 16th. It was held at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport. Southport is England’s golfing capital. While getting ready for the championships they have made some upgrades to the golf course, including lengthening it by 154 yards.
The winner of the 2008 British Open was Padraig Harrington. This was the second time he has won this award. He won two years straight. The Championship Cup has been awarded to the winner of the British Open since 1872. It is also known as the Claret Jug. Claret is a red wine, and the trophy is in the shape of a wine jug that was used to serve the wine. The winner keeps the Claret Jug for a year and has to bring it back to the British Open the next year for the winner to take home with them.
The Royal Birkdale provides a challenge for the golfers and it provides plenty of space for spectators. The Royal Birkdale is one of the finest courses that Britain has to offer. The Ryder Cup and several other championships have also taken place at the Royal Birkdale golf club.
The participants of the British Open are advised to bring a lightweight golf bag with them in case they cannot get a caddie. The caddies are self employed and if they choose not to work, you may be left to carry your own bag. They also need to take their own supply of tees. The golf balls are more expensive in Europe so they will likely want to take your own golf balls with you.
