There are many new faces in the Professional Golf Association. Among these new faces are several stars, who are quickly rising to the top of the pack. Rookie Dustin Johnson won the Turning Stone Resort Championship by making birdies on the last two holes to beat Robert Allenby from Australia by one stroke. He received over a million dollars for that win and it moved him up to 41st place in the PGA standings.
Zach Johnson from Iowa, the 2007 Masters Champion, won the Texas Open the week of October 9, 2008 and a week later won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. This was Zach Johnson's fourth win this year on the PGA Tour and he was just one stroke behind the course record set by Davis Love III in 2001.
According to Tom LaMarre of the Sports Xchange, Tiger Woods is the number one player on the PGA Tour even though he only played half the season. He leads the PGA Tour with a scoring average of 67.75. He only played in six events because of a torn ACL and fractures in his shin. He won the first three tournaments in which he played: the Buick Invitational, the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He also won the Dubai Desert Classic, the fourteenth U.S. Open and was second at the Masters Tournament.
The man in second place is Padraig Harrington of Ireland. The list of top twenty players is very diverse group with players from many nations including Vijay Singh of Fiji, Phil Mickelson of the U.S., Sergio Garcia of Spain, Camilo Villegas of Colombia, Ernie Els of South Africa and K.J. Choi of South Korea. These men are exceptional golfers, but none seem to come close to even an injured Tiger Woods.
