PGA News for 2008

The biggest news for the PGA Tour in 2008 was Tiger Woods' decision to have surgery to repair his injured ACL, and hopefully come back stronger than ever. Woods has been very good for the game of golf. Several professionals have commented that he draws people to the game, and more people watch golf tournaments when they know that Woods is playing. While Woods is absent from the PGA Tour, other players have more of a chance to move up in the standings and show off their skills. Regardless, his fellow golf players, teachers and other golf pros are wishing him a speedy recovery. Many people hope he will soon come back to be a force in professional golf for many more years.

Golfer John Daly has also been in the news recently, for an incident in front of a Hooters restaurant. Daly says that he had some drinks and went to sleep with his eyes open, which frightened the people he was with. They called 911, causing him to have to spend a night in jail. Soon after, a picture leaked of Daly in an orange jail jumpsuit. He is worried that this accidental notoriety will cause Hooters to terminate their sponsorship of him.

Lastly, technology has come to the PGA during the 2008 year. Beginning on August 1, it is legal to use distance measuring devices at certain events. There are six venues in which DMDs may be used, including all Playing Ability Tests and three section championships. There are five PGA venues which will continue to prohibit the use of DMDs, including the Junior PGA Championship and the PGA Professional Championship.
